Real quick one this morning.  I’m a little old school, I suppose, and I’m just that kind of gal that doesn’t mind holding the door for someone.

In fact, I do it as much as needed by anyone.  I also don’t mind letting someone else hold the door for me.  It probably gives them the same warm and fuzzies I get.

But, I have a burning set of questions where the answers have eluded me.  How close does a person need to warrant waiting while holding the door  Ten feet, twenty?  Should you let them inside first or just kind of hold it until they get to it?  Should you still hold the door if they’re being pokey?  That actually makes me a little miffed.  I think because they are being rude to make someone who has volunteered to hold the door for you wait.

I also believe that a “thank you” is due to the person holding the door once you get to it.

So, for me, since I don’t know the answers, I have a few rules of thumb:

  1.  I hold the door for someone who can make it in about 10 seconds or less;
  2. I always let them in first, unless we are all at the door at the same time;
  3. Once you hold the door, I feel obligated to continue to do so until they are through it; and last, but not least,
  4. I always say “thank you” with a smile when someone holds it open for me.

That’s all for this week’s edition of “Monday Manners.”  I hope all of my dear readers have a great week despite Mercury being in retrograde!
